Sustainability

Message from the Sustainability Committee Chair

BML, Inc.’s corporate mission is “Dedication to creating a healthy and cultured society.” Inspired by this raison d’être, we have strived to help maintain and improve people’s health by contributing to healthcare, mainly through our clinical testing business. As the world has been facing various environmental and social issues in recent years, realizing a sustainable world and society requires corporate responses to a variety of environmental issues such as global warming, social issues such as diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as talent development and human rights, and strengthening of corporate governance.

In 2022, BML established a Sustainability Committee to accelerate efforts toward a sustainable society, setting a sustainability policy and reviewing our environmental policy while establishing a medium-term goal to reduce Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 25% from fiscal 2021 levels by 2030. We also identified 13 materialities concerning ESG (environment, society, and governance) and business operations to promote sustainability management further. Specifically, we identified nine ESG items: climate change; energy management; diversity, equity, and inclusion; talent employment and development; employee health and safety; respect for human rights; regulatory compliance; corporate governance; and information security. Considering our business characteristics, we additionally specified the four materialities of quality improvement, sales capability enhancement, DX (digital transformation), and contribution to healthcare. Furthermore, we have set quantifiable KPIs as much as possible for each of the above materialities, intending to ensure the effectiveness of various measures in the future and translate the results into substantive information disclosure.

Regarding our TCFD disclosure last year, we added a new 1.5°C scenario to our climate change scenario analysis, analyzed cumulative rather than single-year risks and opportunities while evaluating them, and held workshops for departmental managers to gather various opinions on risks and opportunities. We also became a signatory of the UN Global Compact in January 2023. We support its 10 principles spanning the four areas of “human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption” and will promote further sustainability efforts.

BML aims to contribute even more to healthcare and people’s health going forward, mainly through our clinical testing business, while advancing sustainability management to help realize a sustainable world and society. We kindly ask for all stakeholders’ continued guidance and support as we pursue these commitments.
